Discussion message Re: One make racing?

Originally sent by: nonerd It transpires I was using the wrong conversion factor. There is 1.609 kilometres to the mile. We generally regard 60 miles an hour as being 100 kph and no, we don't have dual calibration on our speedometers as we have had the metric system in effect for nearly 30 years. Having said that, reverting to imperial measurement for certain things is still a habit for many older people.

Originally sent by: Lee Boekhout Hi Peter, After I sent the initial message, I found a conversion table on the net, which calculated that 48.6 mph to 72.2 kph. While no where near the speed record, it's still scootin' for such a small cart. Believe me. If I thought I had gone 107 kph, I probably would have parked it right there. And again, that figure was obtained from my GPS.

Originally sent by: Ian The magnet that comes with the smart speedo is a rectangular one. All you do is strip it out of its housing and glue it in as Phil says.

Originally sent by: ben Well thanks guys,I tried 960 last night, but I don't think that this was an accurate reading, I am going to change it to 982 & check it against Kems GPS, I am not shore how you guys get good readings if there is no slandered as to the exact figure that this offset figure should set to?

Originally sent by: Phil Ready There is a rectangular magnet available at Dick Smith stores, that with a little scraping of the plastic spoke with a Stanley knife, can be forced in between the spokes with a little 5 second glue added… Like a bought one!

Originally sent by: nonerd The simplest way is the place your front wheel on the ground with the valve stem in a virtical positon. Mark the point on the surface you are using. Move the wheel forward one revolution until the valve stem is again in a vertical position and and again mark the surface.Measure the distance between the marks and this will give you the circumference. Allow a couple of mm for deflection of the tire under load.

Originally sent by: nonerd Use epoxy glue to cement the magnet in place. It should be positioned so that the centre of the magnet passes over the little line marked on the sensor body.----- Original Message -----

Originally sent by: nonerd Hi Ben, The 'official' circumference of the Blokart front wheel is 982mm. This allows for a small deflection of the tire surface under load.

Originally sent by: Phil Ready Unless you have different tyres … That setting will make you think you are going faster than you really are (52.5km/h instead of 50km/h) With tyre on ground & Kart fully laden, make a mark (tyre & ground), roll forward one revolution, make another mark, measure between marks (in mm's) ... Measurement should be around 970mm .

Originally sent by: simon bartley I glued my magnet onto one of the spokes but it didnt stay on long and got lost on the beach. So I bought a magnet from a hardware store ( ~$3) which had a hole in the centre and used a screw to fix it to a spoke near the rim. It has stayed in place for >2 years now. Probably the only important thing about placement is that the magnet is aligned with the switch so that the speedo works.

Originally sent by: Dave Pearson Will depend to some extent on the tire pressure and the weight the cart is when loaded up. I measured the distance on the ground with one rotation of the tire. Cant remember the distance I have set.

Originally sent by: nonerd Mike Lansdown, formerly of Windspeed Hawkes Bay and now of Auckland, is an electronics tech, who converts the 'Smart' brand cycle computer specifically for blokarts. I understand that the main part of the conversion is the replacement of the standard cable with a foil sheilded cable of appropriate length, (1300mm approx) which is then fed through polythene tubing for added protection.

Originally sent by: Marty Hi Denis I picked up a 'Smart' brand computer from DSE in Botany yesterday – it was the only brand they had that I could see. Also $36, it's in a lime green box and the only place the brand appears is on the actual unit visible though the window on the front of the box. The Box just says "3 in 1 Cycle Computer – model F9116". They had about 3 or 4 left yesterday afternoon.
