Interesting comment Grant. I have often wondered how much (or how little) modification of gear makes to the overall performance. I race in the performance class with all or most of the available add-ons, but they are all unmodified 'out of the box' additions. Sail batten trimming, wheel bearing tweaks et all seem to add only minimal performance enhancement and it is the skill of the sailor that wins races.

Discussion message Re: one design

Allow me to play devil's advocate for a few minutes and offer a rather different perspective. As bog-standard out-of-the box blokarts are practically non-existent in blokart racing circles, why don't we consider any kart with unaltered approved blokart accessories, irrespective of the type and number fitted, as 'standard or production' blokarts?

Discussion message Re: Blokarts on Ice (Michigan)

Originally sent by: Mike Moody Oh Boy Don, sounds like quite a road trip! Hope to meet up with ya'all in San Diego. Me and a friend are coming early and will drive down from Vegas for some Southern California sun. Traditionally, Sundays are tune up day, play day, show your friend how to do it day. I think that format is based on the guys with the big boats needing a whole day to assemble and tune up.

Originally sent by: nonerd Unless there have been changes to the weight categories of which I am unaware, the so called 'heavyweight' division starts at 85 kilograms . For those of us, (and I believe there are quite a number) who tip the scales at 110kg + those at the low end of the weight category will still have a 25kg advantage – that's a sack of cement, or if you prefer, the weight of a standard blokart – hardly fair competition, unless they...

Originally sent by: Mike Moody Paul, I know you are for the simple life, but it looks as though some "rules" are going to be inevitable. And for safety and other reasons, I guess we should have some. Just to add a little fuel to the fire, someone from Blokart (who shall go unnamed right Paul?) told me as far as equipment and modifications went, there was only one rule. " If it doesn't fit in the bag, you can't use it!" That seems to work for me.

Discussion message Re: One make racing?

Originally sent by: nonerd I came to the conclusion some time ago that I'm never likely to win a race. Firstly, like you, I'm non-competitive. Secondly, at 116kg, I'm in the super FB class, so who am I going to race against? Many of my colleagues are about the same weight as tumbleweed.

Originally sent by: nonerd I thought blokart International had already drafted modified and non-modified rules to cover add-ons and modifications? As I understand it, if it ain't an official blokart product, then it ain't kosher.. The one exception was to pulleys – you can basically use what you like.

Discussion message Re: Best position for Tell-tales on blokart sail

Originally sent by: nonerd At around 116kgs, I'm firmly in the FB class, so need to catch all the 'puff' I can . I think therefore that my 4 metre , is both the sail of choice and necessity. Having bought a Pod, I am keen to see what difference it makes to my speed and general performance before making any further changes or modifications, such as shortening the pulley whip and/or fitting the CRB mast sections.

Originally sent by: Don McKenzie Foam filled mast The string thing doesn;t work for me either as I have filled my mast sections with foam (very messy), it did hold the mast stiffer as I'm a heavy weight but since the stiffies came out I have moved on to a better set up.

Originally sent by: nonerd I understand the ratchet pulleys with the segmented sheeve (him wot cost $NZ$118) will hold the sheet rope steady and will only pay out when you let the sheet rope go entirely. The cleat is a good tip for the more daring and/or experienced though.

Originally sent by: nonerd Slight snag – my second mast section contains a spare pulley whip. Holding your thumb and forefinger together and running them down the mast pocket seems to work just as well.
