Hi Graham Jenny and I have a spare kart but 4 metre sail needs battens, boom, pulley whip and sheet as I recall.

Discussion message Auckland Sunday, Xmas Picnic - go naked!

Finally, a day with good winds and fine weather, plus of course good food and company. Sunny and hot and with 12+ knts of breeze most of the day sailing without POD or carbons was not a problem other than Grant having the wind blow up his shorts! It did take a while for me to get everything ready before the day with 3 karts sitting with PODs on and not enough standard mast sections if we all used 4 metre sails. Luckily Dan and Matty sailed with 3 meters.

Discussion message RE: Auckland Sunday

Hey Russell, I have cut my handkerchief on the diagonal and used some sticking plaster to add some wooden skewers as battens - and it looks pretty much like a 2m, and I have a spare sail too. The stripes look kinda cute on the diagonal too – will probably produce a venturi effect as the air is channelled up if I align the battens with the stripes. So I can join you and Grant1!

Discussion message Auckland Sunday - 1st winter series race day

Clean the sand and salt water out of your bearings for the first race day of the ABC Winter series this coming Sunday (22 April). The series will be held the 4th Sunday of every month, April - September, with the following Sunday being a back-up day if we have to postpone because of lack of wind.

Discussion message Tentative timing for 2008 blokart World CUP

Greetings All, Failing the previously planned Auckland Oct/Nov 2007 blokart World Cup we propose Japan as a viable location in April 2008. Why?: Bruce Pullman Park in Auckland – New Zealand - is not on in 2007.

Discussion message Re: Poll Results for "Batterns - what should be allowed?"

Sorry Mike, I disagree,Those that went to Perth for Pacrim were given a real lesson among the middleweights by that man they call Bugs.Racing an older kart with one of the original sails ever made, showed us,like young Hayden, what good sailors can do.Bugs would be middle to high on the weight scale for middleweights, and in races he would do voluntary 360s and still blizs the field.

Man! that was fast! The batten poll was open, voted on, voting closed and counted before I even read the opening message. As the world turns I guess. Anyway, I would have voted for #3 any batten modified as you please.

Discussion message Re: Blokart Batten Rule Debate

Well I just tried to vote and the poll works… But it wouldn't let me vote more than once. I only noticed after clicking around 50 times though! Interestingly I don't use carbon battens now that I had to shave a set of blokart battens for the NZOpen this year, Not because I think that blokart battens are better, but because they are the same and I am too lazy to change them over.

Discussion message Blokart Batten Rule Debate

Hi everyone, I thought I would try out the poll feature in Mailspaces. I am not sure how it works exactly so my apologies if it results in lots of emails. To kick off – a poll on the Batten Rule… My Thoughts on this lively & interesting debate. 1) While the sails are computer cut there will be manufacturing tolerances in the sail and battens. If you know what your doing or wish to experiment why not be allowed to sand down battens for a better shape?

Discussion message RE: Blokart Bearings, salt water and sand

Dave, From my understanding all blokart battens are made to the same specification but they are hand sanded so there is slight variations in each batten. The specification has changed on one occasion in the past and this is very obvious as the newer battens are black and the older ones are grey and over 3 yrs old. I am sure you will see more consistent battens in the future. Just my 2 cents.

Hi Bruce, I’m glad you raised these points, particularly the “Olympic” concept of one design. You are not alone. And I’m sure blokart international would be interested in embracing this! Meanwhile we need something that everyone can abide by. Can we actually tell what is or isn’t a blokart™ batten? Will we start blueprinting them?

Hi Grant, I have some time on my hands so I thought I would contribute – apologies for personal references to your karting ability On the issue of even playing fields – please don’t regulate out all the mystery!

Discussion message RE: Blokart Bearings, salt water and sand

Hi Mike, I personally prefer a black cape and ftat-brimmed hat! All that furry stuff gets caught in the bearings, and that’s not safe. Regarding the rules, we certainly got the battens wrong – and I expect we’ll get a few more things wrong, but it isn’t until an event that the rules can be put to the test. Making a mistake is all part of the process of learning – what we should not allow is for the same mistake to be made twice.

Jimi, BTW, I saw the PIC of Santa and helper all dressed in red. Should become the standard blokart racing garb, yes? I like it. Thanks for the feedback. I thought the dust at Ivanpah was bad but take desert dust and add salt water and its bad news for bearings. My experience on the beach was an education all around but that was the most problematic.

Greetings Mike, Standard seals shouldn’t have this problem, as you describe it, unless the wear-and-tear process is “assisted” a bit. During the scrutiny exercise at the 2006 NZ Opens, I saw many seals so “worn”, that I could see the bearings rolling about. (Ooops, have I inadvertently dropped a speed enhancement tip). Now what is the point of the rule of having outer seals if they have been subjected to “Orbit-Re-entry wear and tear”?

Discussion message wgtn wind?

Originally sent by: Phil Ready So where is all the wind? It is not looking too good! Too wet to do yard work, will have to do Blokart maintenance, now what shape are the battens meant to be? Keep an eye out on the weather.

Discussion message RE: Putting up the sail

Originally sent by: Nicko If you have the longer sail bags and dont remove your battens each time then the following method i find very efficient. With the mast and sail still up i remove the pully whip and place the free end into one of the middle mainsheet saddles on the sail, then pull the mainsheet tight.

Discussion message RE: Auckland this weekend

Originally sent by: Bruce Hi Marg, First tip (from Les in Tauranga) we learnt about sail assembly is don't fold it, roll it up complete with battens and boom – sticks a out of the sail bag a bit and wont fit in the kart bag of course but still quite convenient in the car. Saves creases and having to insert battens on windy days!
