Jiglu: BLOKART-NZ: Discussion: RE: RE: RE: Australian Champs Round Up

Hi all,

I've just started reading about this little controversy – if I have it right, our guys went over to Oz and cleaned up just about every class.
This is acknowledged by the Aussies if you ask them the direct question, but because they were the Australian champs they only refer to the Australians in each race with the highest points as being the Australian champions. I have no doubt that this is how it appeared in the Aussie newspapers. This reminds me of being at the Oshkosh airshow in Wisconsin back in 1988 – they had a Hawker Harrier jump jet which McDonnell Douglas had recently commenced building under licence to Hawker. They had it surrounded by a circle of US flags, and the publicity referred to it as the latest fighter plane built in America. Cunning words, with no mention of being designed by the Poms 20 years before. Both Aussie and US have this attitude to winning in common, and I think we have something to learn here in NZ

Sounds like when we have the NZ championships, we should invite people from all round the world, and may the best Karts win.
However for the Aussies, who are obviously used to "special rules" we could then have a "special championships", just like they do after the Olympics, to cater for those who through no fault of their own, are unable to compete with the worlds best.
Make's me embarassed to be an Aussie!! I live in NZ and still cop it over the underarm incident!

Todd,
The purpose of the Australian Championships is to decide and Australian Champion. Unfortunately we currently have only one event where we all have the chance to get together and do this. No one is denying that the NZ competitors cleaned up, and I am personally glad they were there to show us how it is done.
In the future we should probably decide Australian Champions based on a points system over a series of events, that way events like Ballart (and all
events) can be open to all competitors. First place can then take home the first place trophy and anyone registered for the Australian Championship will be awarded points towards the series.
Hopefully a NZ competitor will win at your Championships!

Tall poppy syndrome is of concern in nz? a strange social tweek devalues the
outstanding achievement of the few so that the masses may feel better about themselves. I see that this sickness is far advanced in Aussie. What happened to celebrating human achievement and congratulating those who have worked their asses off to be bloody good at what they do? From invention through its evolution to an international sport – this is at the very root of blo-karting.
Rise up to the challenge.

The Australian Champs was a great weekend with some great racing and
action battled out on the runways of the Ballarat Airport between the classes and Aussies v Kiwis. This being the first major event in Australia for Blokarts and with what we have learned the sport in Australia has a great future and will only grow.
The Ballarat Airport lived up to its name of always having wind and did
not let us down with, 15–20 knot winds being the average.
Friday and Sunday saw the 3.0 metre sails out of their bags, while
Saturday saw everyone using 4.0 metre sails.
Media coverage for the event was well supported with MX newspaper (1.1
million readers in Melbourne) and The Ballarat Courier all running news stories, ABC Radio with 2 on air radio interviews and WINTV screening the action on Tuesday night.
The timing system from Dorian Race Timing was working like a treat. The
difference from V8 supercars to Blokarts was not that much different once we
sorted out a few cliches in points. I also hear that Barry might be also doing some timing in NZ for Blokart events.
