Hi
That is pretty much how I do it, except I put my knee on the bottom of the sail and proceed to insert the mast sections one after the other (saves mast dragging on ground and because you are pushing the sections stay together), once the sail has a full set of mast sections it will happily stay on the ground while you locate the top hitching.
Dropping the sail is in reverse, as each mast section comes out I place it on the sail beside boom. (I may have just described what is in the Blokart assembly video!?
I used to grab hold of the pulley whip along with the mast when lifting the mast in place (holding the pulley whip prevented it from banging around and maybe getting damaged). But since seeing what they do at Blokart heaven, and that is to haul in the sheet until the pulley whip is up against the boom and tie a slip knot to keep it there. If you do it when packing up, before taking the sail down it means the sail is safe and you can cart your Blokart around by the front wheel without the kart blowing over (sometimes is pays to release the downhaul as well)
Pulley whip part may be like the way Bruce does it?
Regards
Phil

Subject: RE: [blokart] Auckland this weekendHi Marg,
First tip (from Les in Tauranga) we learnt about sail assembly is don't fold it, roll it up complete with battens and boom – sticks a out of the sail bag a bit and wont fit in the kart bag of course but still quite convenient in the car. Saves creases and having to insert battens on windy days!
We assemble the mast first – we use one complete turn of insulation tape around the joins so it stays in one piece setting up and pulling it out of the sail
Then we roll out the sail with the head away from the wind – boom is right angles closest to the wind on the ground and ideally beside the cart which is assembled directly into wind.
Boom claw is underneath mast at this stage
We keep sail flat on the ground and Insert the mast and making sure the boom claw is around mast, main sheet and pullywhip are rigged
Standing with my back to the wind alongside mast near where boom claw is, I pick up mast/sail to vertical position – I have my right hand just below boom claw and left hand as high up the mast as I can reach.
Keeping my back to the wind at all times with sail upright and flowing away from the wind I walk over to Kart and place mast in the mast holder. Working quickly, I rig the main sheet, downhaul and lastly attach pullywhip to Kart. Either I go at this point or immediately roll car over with sail back on ground. Flapping sails are not conducive to long life and the noise is stressful!
Hope this helps
Rgds

Subject: Re: [blokart] Auckland this weekendHi folks,
I went down to a local beach today. Intent on getting my kart out, which I did, sail out of the bag, started setting up and changed my mind, wind seem to have picked up. I decided not to sail,as a first timer! I will have to work out some stratergy when it is windy +++ besides the obvious pointing into the wind Any tips? How to assemble your sail in windy conditions on your own?
cheers,

arrangement. However as a not terribly fit 62 year old, I declined,
although he is welcome to 'have a go' on the blokart. As a group, we have discussed supplying a few blokarts for interested
parties to try, as a means of promoting interest in the sport. It
would require fairly strict control and ideal weather conditions to
succeed. The experience of those who hire blokarts for a living will
attest to that, I'm certain.

I should clarify my comments. I certainly dont mean a 'free for all'

I was considering friends, or someone that may show a genuine interest.Whilst I was checking out our local beaches yesterday (variations in
wind strength etc) I chatted with a bloke that was using a surf kite
for the first time, ifwe
'bump' into one another
again we thought we could swap our wind power, just to ave a go! I
willbe
going with what I feel comfortable with at the time.
So, I would be a tad choosey!!

interest
in having a go. As fellow boating and sailing enthusiasts and being
known

approached by total strangers, especially teenagers as I have been ,
would
make me very wary. Obviously anyone using your kart does so at their
own
risk, but what about damage to your blokart? Who pays? You can pretty
much
bet they won't.

Subject: RE: [blokart] Auckland this weekendObviously Grant you have done a lot of homework on this issue
concerning
Orewa and yes that end of the beach is normally absent of people.
So
good
luck with the sailing and if the harbour master should show faceremember
to
be VERY polite so that he does not make it his priority to have a
ban
inserted into the bylaws.
Anyone approaching with a notebook or grumpy face, offer them a
ride
inyour
kart. Always with a smile.

Subject: RE: [blokart] Auckland this weekendI have seen the comments on Smartgroups about Orewa Beach and the
comment
about the Harbourmaster chasing people off and confiscating
blokarts.
While
I wouldn't intentionally antagonise other beach users and stay
clear
ofsurf
club people (who think they own the beaches – but do an admirable
job)
I
am
personally going to put some of these anti-blokart "laws" to the
test.
As I will be north this weekend, I checked out the Rodney District
Council
Bylaws in respect of Orewa and Omaha Beaches. I also rang RDC.
TheARC
has
bylaws relating to the Maritime area which the Harbourmaster
administers,
but no one could direct me to any bylaw relating to blokarts or
landyachts.
I also spoke to a local "Beach Inspector" (the ones that administer
the5
knots within 200m of the shore and dogs on the beach), and the only
bylaw
he
was aware of is the one about vehicles on beaches. This says
somethinglike
"vehicles are permitted on public beaches for the sole purpose of
launching
and retrieving watercraft, and should travel by the most direct
path".
He
conceded where that path included a soft patch that would swallow
upthe
vehicle, that the "most practical path" applied. Also that a
vehicle
would
normally be motor powered, which a blokart (generally) isn't.
We assume that a Blokart is not a watercraft (except at the hands
ofMike
or
me, and we always obey the 5 knot limit being in the FB class and
especially
when in the water), so it must be a vehicle. So dive into your
cornflakes
and grab a small plastic boat and chuck it in your kart asinsurance,
you
can be launching or retrieving that.
But seriously, this is a really muddy area, and perhaps it is best
leftthat
way, unlike Kapiti who wrote it into a bylaw.
I'm going to check out Omaha if there is an Easterly and not too
many
people
on the beach – as is the case anyway at low tide – so short of a
sign
that
tells me blokarts are banned, I'll give it a go. I'll tell any
Harbourmaster that tries to chuck me off that I couldn't find abylaw
and
to
please show it to me. (Oh where is my rubber duckie). Or perhaps a
towball
on the blokart might help.
