It transpires I was using the wrong conversion factor. There is 1.609 kilometres to the mile. We generally regard 60 miles an hour as being 100 kph and no, we don't have dual calibration on our speedometers as we have had the metric system in effect for nearly 30 years. Having said that, reverting to imperial measurement for certain things is still a habit for many older people.

After I sent the initial message, I found a conversion table on the net,
which calculated that 48.6 mph to 72.2 kph. While no where near the speed
record, it's still scootin' for such a small cart. Believe me. If Ithought
I had gone 107 kph, I probably would have parked it right there. And
again,
that figure was obtained from my GPS. I don't know if vehicles in NZ have
both miles and kilometers on your speedometers, you will see that 63 mphis
100 kph, which will give you some comparison. I plan to be at Ivanpah in
2006 also, so hope to see you there...lee

meet
falls too close to other planned events to attend.
I am mainly sailing on firm but wet sand which probably offers greater
rolling resistance than your dry lake bed. My kart certainly creaks and
flexes at speed and is occasionally airborne too. More frequently the
windward wheel loses contact with the ground.According to my conversion, 48.6mph equates to 107.63 kph, which exceeds
the
world record...not that I disbelieve you for a moment. lol!

My top speed, that I have recorded with the GPS, is 48.6 mph. Offhand,I
don't know the kph conversion, but that was enough to get me across
the
dry
lake in a hurry. The other side of the lake was coming up fast, and
was
not
quite sure if I could turn in time, but I did. At that speed, this
light
little cart sure skips around a lot, like it's only hitting the ground
every
few feet?. And I just LOVE IT!!!! Hope to see you at Ivanpah. Lee

I admit I'm not quite that heavy and have a lower centre of gravity,
(lol!)
but suffer much the same problem. I too have a 4 metre sail and have
been
blown right over on more than 1 occasion when standing still!
Obviously
the
force of the wind sideways is greater than the force required to
overcome
the inertia needed to get you moving forward. Once moving however,
the
4
metre sail seems quite capable of handling wind speeds up to around
40
kph
or higher. My GPS has often recorded speeds in the mid to high 50's,
but
I
have yet to break the 60kph barrier. I've never used a 3 metre sail
so
don't
know what difference if any it would make.

Regarding the 4M sails, I thought I'd drop a note. I am a bigguy,
weighing 270 lbs and over 6 feet. The 4M sail helps a lot,
especially
in
light winds. But I do note a control issue with higher winds.
Before winter hit, I was sailing in mild winds with the 4Msails,
which
increased to 30+ mph winds rapidly as a storm approached. The GPS
hit
48.2
MPH at one point, my second highest speed noted. Before I could
get
back
to
the truck to change to a 3M sail I suddenly had a gust of
considerably
over
30+ mph. That gust caused my cart to slide approximately 20 to 30
feet
SIDEWAYS, then continued in my original direction as if nothing
had
happened. Pucker factor:10+. Changed sails to 3M and had a ball.

I haven't noticed that much variation, but I haven't laid themtogether
maybe, PB or the sailmaker at blokart, could clear up how accurate
the
cut
would be. I asumed it would be to a pattern possibly CNC cut in
batches.

Hi Kem,
Its hard to have an argument for keeping to blokart sails, asthe
cut

the sails that come from blokart are different in cut shape, as I
have
seen
in my 4mt with other 4mts, so why not get a sail cut by another
sail
loft
so
long as its within size, as blokart cannot supply all sails the
same.
See ya

G'day Jimi,
Thanks for the constructive comment. I just thought it wasworth
raising
for disscussion, as most guy's here run pre stretched rope as it
saves
the
gloves and reduces the burn in 50kt gybes. I don't think that's a
problem,
but I can see where it could go and I want to keep it simple.
Your right about the grease, I reckon that it doesn't make
heaps
of
difference, but the ceramic bearings I refer to, have less rolling
resistance at 10times the cost, I say stick with std. With the Pod's I've swapped mine over with someone of
resonable
sailing
abitity in a naked blokart and won. As well as chased a mate at
70km/h
last
weekend, he was naked and I had the Pod on but still had to work
my
lines
to
catch him, I couldn't just cruise up to him.
Enjoy!
Cheers

Greetings Kem,
Just having organized the 2004 Japan Championships withoutfinals
due
to
lack of wind, I see where you're coming from.
2004 Japan Finals due this coming weekend if winds hold up.
Back to your items in- and outside the race:
Should we race under the blokart rules or water sailingrules?
– I like the blokart ones.
= I say blokart rules, absolutely.
Mainsheet ropes – Is an aftermarket pre-stretched typeaccepted?
– I don't mind the standard but find the prestrectch
smoother
and
faster
reacting.
= If pre-streched or a RED sheet has your fancy, Go forwhichever
or
RED.
Sails – Should you be able to get your own cut, as long as
it's
within
size?
– Rigid wings would be fast:) but I like the blokart sails a
good
combination between being rigid/fast and flexi/stretch to
soften
the
gusts.
= I don't want to go there;
Masts – full carbon one piece?
– I like the pull apart, packability.
= Let's stick to the blokart issue and have budget decideCRB
or
not.
On the
day there can be absolutely ZERO advantage to CRB's as I see
it.
5
kilos
difference will do much more.
Bearings – Ceramic or standard?
– I don't want to go down the costly ceramic slide.
= Bearings are a matter of choice I reckon. To what degreedo
we
want
to
discriminate the various types of grease used in standard
bearings.
Utterly
impossible.
Tyres – Aftermarket with size or tread variations?
– I like the Std tyres.
= Let's stick to standard.
Cleats – Adding cleats and locking attachments?
– This is an unfair advantage in marathons, as it takes somework
away
from
the pilot.
= Out with the lazy-aids is my view;
Airfoils – Mudgaurds or side wings?
– Do we allow them in racing?
= Out, is my view;
One more:
POD or DirtSkirt?
– I used a POD in the 2004 Japan Race for simple promotionpurposes
and also
because it is the First Prize. Regardless on a good wind day
I
would
have
removed it.
Best regards and H.N.Y.
Jimi

Hi All,
Just a disscussion, on what your opinion is onmodifications.
This
is
for
blokart racers who compete in these wicked, one make, racing
machines.
To
give a bit of perspective, I will list a few mod's and we
can
hopefully get
an agreement on what is acceptable.
So the fastest sailor wins, not the one with the biggestwallet.
(It
maybe a
bit of wallet envy)
I just want to make clear that these are not my ideas, justmy
opinions. I'm
raising the discussion to get scrutineering events,
standarised
internationally if possible.
