I didn't land in anything. The crap was thrown, with the throwers being the same few every time. I have no issue with people disagreeing with what I write, but I do find it a bit sad when they resort to personal abuse and nobody on Smartgroups takes them to task because it seems the majority are gutless fence sitters.

The Smart is a cheap, low end cycle computer chosen because the wiring is accessible and/or you're on a budget. The reed switch is soldered to a peace of mica which is sandwiched between two halves of a plastic housing. It's uninsulated and certainly not weather proof. The handlebar mount wiring and contacts are equally vulnerable. Yours works and so did mine, but I never trusted its accuracy. I think it's entirely possible that sand build up on the sensor housing could cause the reed switch to trip erratically. Note I said could, not that it did. I offered my Smart cycle computer free to anyone that wanted it as you may remember?

The Cateye Wireless would have been a vastly better choice if not for the limitations of distance between sensor and computer.
