The string thing doesn;t work for me either as I have filled my mast sections with foam (very messy), it did hold the mast stiffer as I'm a heavy weight but since the stiffies came out I have moved on to a better set up.

Slight snag – my second mast section contains a spare pulley whip. Holding your thumb and forefinger together and running them down the mast pocket seems to work just as well.

And here is another,
Dangle a string (strongish) down the center of the mast extensions, so
when
you are pulling the mast out of the sail pocket, use the string to assist
getting ALL the sections out!!
Not my idea, I saw someone else do it.
