I glued my magnet onto one of the spokes but it didnt
stay on long and got lost on the beach. So I bought a
magnet from a hardware store ( ~$3) which had a hole
in the centre and used a screw to fix it to a spoke
near the rim. It has stayed in place for >2 years now.
Probably the only important thing about placement is
that the magnet is aligned with the switch so that the
speedo works.
Hope that helps
Simon

Calibrate front tyre to 960mm this allows for
deflection.

Thanks Martin.

Yeah thats the one many of us have, and it will need
to be rewired
(extended).

Hi Denis

I picked up a 'Smart' brand computer from DSE in
Botany yesterday – it was
the only brand they had that I
could see. Also $36, it's in a lime green box and
the only place the brand
appears is on the actual unit
visible though the window on the front of the box.
The Box just says "3 in 1
Cycle Computer – model F9116".
They had about 3 or 4 left yesterday afternoon.

According to the instructions it is fully adjustable
for wheel circumference
(in mm increments) from 2999mm
down to 10mm! Beats me how they could fit the magnet
onto a wheel that small
though. Have yet to try fitting
it to the Kart. It will need some form of extension
as the wire from sensor
to head unit is only 800mm long.
Has km/h or MPH speeds – current speed, average
speed, max speed (0.0 to 199
9 km/h, or 0 to 110 mph), trip
time, 24hr clock, alarm clock, trip distance, max
speed alarm (fully
adjustable up to 199.9 km/h – anyone game
to try THAT?!?), trip time alarm (in case you have
an apointment to get back
for!) and trip distance alarm.

Instructions also specify it is a most advanced
model, and they believe it
will become an inseperable friend!

Regards
Martin

Dave,

Are yousure the brand was 'Smart'
'DSE only have the 'Liam' model ($36) but I want to
make sure I get a
replacement that can do the job. There are no useful
specs on it.

Cheers
Denis

Hi Denis.

Your adaption sounds great. You should take some
pics and post it on the
Smartgroup to show others.

I knew the limitation of the new Cateye's, so
avoided buying that type.

The Smart brand speedo has given me no trouble at
all, and I have reached
and recorded speeds of around 65kph. (Very hard to
control at that speed!)

Hi Dave,

Interested in your speedo adaptation, as I have been
experimenting quite a
bit as well.

I am using a 10-year old 'Cateye Mitty 100' but it
can't process the
information past 20 pulses/sec which is about 53
km/h.

How fast can the Smart brand' register?

(I made up a reed switch and slid it up inside the
front fork, then drilled
a hole up directly into the steering column – so
there is no visible wiring
or sensors at all. It's a very reliable arrangement
since it can't get
knocked or wet.)

blokart

For value for money, I think the best bike computer
you can get, which will
calibrate for a Blokart wheel is the "Smart" brand
available from Dick Smith
electronics for $35 ish. I think that this is the
type that the Blokart guys
have modified.

I know of many people that have used this speedo,
and if you are not afraid
of doing a little re-wiring yourself then they work
perfectly. I have tested
the accuracy against my Garmin GPS unit, and it
agreed almost perfectly. The
key is to enter the correct circumference of your
tyre at the laden pressure

There is nothing wrong with the accuracy of the
GPS's these days if all you
want is a speed reading.

I have wired my bike computer through the handlebar
piece, so it is
effectively 'cordless'. You just have to remember to
disconnect it when you
pull the handlebar out. Some people have done much
better jobs than I have,
and may have their advice also.

Keep in mind that this is only MY opinion, but hope
this helps.

Dave

I am also interested in the best type of speedo. Has
anyone any
comment on the accuracy of the small GPSs you can
buy now?
