Perhaps also it is a well calculated way of limiting those who do not consider themselves as being competitive.
And why not? - it is a World Champs. Most World Champs require some sort of trials to sort out the best of the best.
By the way, I do agree the fee is high, but I will beg, steal and borrow to get there, and if that is what it costs, thats how much I have to steal!
