We discussed this at the BAI meeting on Sunday, so I’ll give everyone an update as soon as I get a moment. I am also approaching the airlines with a view to getting a 150 kg per person including baggage so we can take our karts as checked baggage.
I will try Air NZ first and put to them the business they have lost with all us flying internationally to events with other airlines. Anyone with Airline contacts, please let me know. A mate of mine does Corporate Travel, so I’m sounding him out.
A rigid 1-design concept is all very well in theory, but too bad if you draw a pool kart that is bent. I know what mine was like at the NZ Open, and what it went like after I straightened it. I saw this at the Dragon Boats too, there were some known dogs and the teams that drew these felt they were at a disadvantage. Okay if we all get new karts each series, but my pocket isn’t that deep to even pay a entry fee that would support that.
Having done a lot of match racing with Orca, I am amazed at the difference between karts and sails, and also that after a race you adapt. This might bring out a new aspect in racing where there is a pool for karts. Those that adapt the fastest will benefit the most.
I’m also convinced the tinkering with gear puts more sailors at a disadvantage, and that’s good for me. I sail with everything standard. Yes there are some faster than me and they have modified gear, but the main difference is they are better sailors, but they also get caught with the wrong gear at times.
Food for thought....
Cheers
Grant

Subject: RE: [blokart] Japan blokart 2008 OpensGreetings Bruce,
Initially, for the record, Todd is a blokart dealer and facilitates rentals. HiWiNZ is the Japan Distributor which implies that we supply and service the dealer network
So we do not facilitate rental blokarts per se.
However, I understand your message.
I keep 2 blokarts in NZ for the annual events but that is clearly because I know we will go there every year and can’t be expected of all event participants on the globe.
At this point in time we could probably scramble 20 blokarts at a marginal rental rate to provide the frame as a base to add your secret b-squirrel-bits.
By 2008..04 I would presume that 40-80 of such frames would be available for rental.. (Again at a marginal rate)
At this point in time it would probably be good to get the EU, OZ and US view on this. Can you guys provide frames in numbers to cater for the “foreigners”???
(foreigners – Gaigin - is such a loaded word in Japan that I even got the English spelling wrong 3 times – scary stuff……I am obviously …. going yellow and will have to have …….my hair dyed black soon)
Referring back to a previous email on this topic, I personally look forward to a time when you turn up and get handed a stock standard “1-Design” piece of kit and go for gold only based on your skills rather than “the super-glue you desire to swish your bearings with or the Kevlar-reinforced-Kauri-trimmed-Rimu-tipped-well-ground-down-battens-of-banana-republic-make to excite your sails”
I completely understand the message of having access to a blokart on location and at this point in time I believe the dealers in Japan can pull together and facilitate enough “frames”.
Best regards,
Jimi

Subject: RE: [blokart] Japan blokart 2008 OpensHi Jimi and Grant 2 and BAI
Looks like we need an updated and co-ordinated international events calendar on the club sites or on Blokart International – I notice the BAI site is only showing up to October 06.
This should show tentative dates and firm dates and ideally an interactive opportunity for registration of interest – or at least an email link to the event co-ordinator to do this.
April next year could work in Japan but what about Gobi desert?, Australian nationals and America - looks like a big round trip to me!!
Seriously, this is possible but the main issue will be transporting Karts – I have the beginnings of an idea about this – something akin to timeshare where we purchase one kart frame, pod and wheels in a foreign location and just travel with masts, sails, and maybe bearings and spare tyres. Then we share our partkart in exchange for use of another in a different location.
Another alternative is we/bai help Jimi and Todd and their counterparts build up their hire fleets to accommodate big numbers. We are going to need their commercial involvement in storing and maintaining the fleets either way.
I know this somewhat against the kart in a bag idea but it seems that any affordable overseas trip as a group involves separate freighting and a long period kartless

Subject: [blokart] Japan blokart 2008 OpensGreetings All,
In wake of a larger future here and an immediate larger future elsewhere for a first World Cup we have reset our sights.
The - Japan blokart 2008 Opens – is where it is at. Set for the April timeframe but no dates are set.
The coming year will see 2 large championships here in Japan. The Japan blokart 2007 Championships in the Oct./Nov. timeframe and the Japan Opens of 2008 in April of 2008.
That does not imply that the Japan blokart 2007 Championships will be for local sailors only. In essence it will be a follow-up on last years event and in fact it will be a practice run for the April 2008 global event.
More details on both events will soon be appearing on our website at www.hiwinz.com
Best regards,
Jimi
PS In the interim a flood of new news events has been posted at the same site. Have a look.

Subject: [blokart] Tentative timing for 2008 blokart World CUPGreetings All,
Failing the previously planned Auckland Oct/Nov 2007 blokart World Cup we propose Japan as a viable location in April 2008.
Why?:
Bruce Pullman Park in Auckland – New Zealand - is not on in 2007.
April winds howl here … have a look at this for tomorrow: http://www.mapion.co.jp/weather/admi/12/12202.html The 2006 April wind speed at 40m up was 6.7 m/s. On ground level it averages out to 4.1 m/s. That makes 4m and 3m sails a must have.
April has quiet days to but they are in a very far minority;
April does not conflict with other events in the Oct-Nov timeframe in NZ/AUS/Europe/US.
Locations proposed:
Hasaki Gyoko – Hasaki Fishing Port: See attached Hasaki Gyoko.kmz – Google Earth Location
Pending good sand - Sun-Sun-Park; See attached Hasaki Sun Sun Park;
Alternative beach location – Ioka; See attached Ioka;
Alternative location – Makuhari; See attached Makuhari;
If you don’t have google-earth – get it here: http://earth.google.com/
That gives you all 12 months advance notice to sharpen your battens, clean your bearings and generally “sharpen your nose and Japanese”
Give us a heads up guys? Who’s on for the April 2008 Japan blokart World Championships ?????
I’m having trouble keeping up with media events. It’d be apparent from the last 2 months where we get Media, i.e Radio, Magazines, TV and newspapers on a weekly basis now, that we’d get a very good coverage for the April 2008 event.
Coming as a spectator is optional. Coming without a blokart …… You’d regret that for the rest of your life. (Full Stop)
Very Best Regards,
Jimi
